I find baking not only stress relieving, but fun and delicious. I’m always trying to find new recipes to make and ways to make old recipes taste better. That’s why I love a good cook book that not only gives me recipes, but tips that will help me in the long run. I came across Harvey Rosen’s book Culinary Carving and Plate Decoration and was instantly attracted to it for many reasons. Rosen’s book gives the reader ideas to decorate a plate. Whether it’s centerpieces or garnishes, the book gives readers step-by-step instructions and pictures of the finished product.
What bothers me about many cook books is that there aren’t any pictures of the finish products or the steps are too hard and I have trouble following them. Rosen does a great job at instructing his readers so even a novice cook will have no trouble following. An added bonus is that you can purchase the Culinary Carving and Plate Decorating DVD separately for even more tips and step-by-step instructions.
Among others, the book includes chapters on; “The Basics of Carving”, “Scenes of Animals and Birds in Three Dimensions”, and “The Basic Techniques of Fruit Garnishing and Carving.”
I use garnishes all the time to impress friends. Almost everyone I make the garnishes for can’t believe that I actually made the garnish and they instantly want to know how I did it. I also like the DVD as an added bonus because I like to visually see the steps as I’m making it. Therefore, if I’m stuck I can just revert back to the picture or screen.
The DVD of Culinary Carving and Plate Decoration by Harvey Rosen is available at Kerekes for $26.95. Although the book isn’t available on the website you can get it at Amazon or at your local bookstore. However, Kerekes does sell Rosen’s other book, Melon Garnishing.
